A must is also a visit to the fair “Fiera del Levante” in September and for those who love folklore the feast of St. Nicholas, the holy patron of the city from 7th – May as well as in December.

A place whose origins and livelihoods stem from the earth, which over the years has been skillfully transformed by the inhabitants into art. Grottaglie is, in fact, known for its fine works of terracotta. In the old town-center you can browse in over fifty stores with low carches. These have been operated for generations and showy plates, dishes, holy water basins, figurines as well as the famous “Pomi” made glazed ceramics, the symbols of Figula art from Grottaglie can be found. An art which we find also during the celebrations in honor of Saint Ciro as well as during the lighting of the great fire on 31 January.

CASTEL DEL MONTE

Making the list of UNESCO world heritage monuments in 1996, this town lies on a gentle green hill, embedded in the National Park Alta Murgia. It is characteristic of the mysterious octagonal ground plan of the castle, which, according to experts, was perhaps used as an astronomical observatory or as an imposing hunting lock. It differs fundamentally from all other castles in Apulia and is mentioned in mysterious legends.

OTRANTO

Otranto is situated on a rocky promontory overlooking the sea. You can walk along the entire beach promenade or lose yourself in the small streets and alleys of the “ancient Borgo of Otranto”.
